Egyptian Government Opens Market to eSIMs for First Time 

Amr Talaat, the Egyptian Minister of Communications and Information Technology (MCIT), announced in a July press conference that the country will for the first time  introduce eSIMs to the local market within the quarter.  

Egyptian game-changer   

The announcement has been anticipated for a while, with the Egyptian government having expressed interest in including and regulating eSIMs for several years. Back in 2022, Telecom Egypt successfully conducted initial tests for eSIM operation on its networks, collaborating with industry leaders to ensure technical readiness and optimal service delivery. 

Local market impact 

The introduction of eSIMs is poised to intensify competition within Egypt's telecom market. With the ability to easily switch between plans, consumers will have more choices, potentially leading to lower costs over time.  

Following regulatory approval from the National Telecom Regulatory Authority, several local providers are already standing by to launch eSIM services to consumers. Mr. Talaat said that this development is expected to foster innovation and competitive pricing as mobile network operators vie for customers. 

National growth & goals 

The MCIT minister also highlighted the ICT sector's impressive growth, making it Egypt's highest-growing sector for the past six years, with over 16% growth on the previous fiscal year. The telco sector contributed a significant 5.8% to the country's GDP in FY2023/2024, and the ministry aims to increase this figure to around 8% over the next year. 

In addition to eSIMs, the Minister expressed his intention to expand the use of advanced connectivity across various sectors and services for Egyptian citizens, a key pillar of which is expected to be establishing stronger partnerships between the government and private sectors in driving innovation.
