Many articles describe the vital role that eSIMs play in the infrastructure of Mobile Network Operators. However, the role of the Entitlement Server (ES) in the Operator's ecosystem still needs to be fully recognized. For this reason, this article introduces and illustrates its role.

Essential features

A key feature is the capacity for seamless eSIM downloads triggered without any additional actions by the end-user performs. This is important as the subscriber may forget about following up on QR or activation codes. The ES controls everything, making life easier for the end-user.

The service activation request is sent to an MNO’s BSS after installing the eSIM on the end-users device. This is an underestimated function, which is a crucial facilitator in the activation services process on the MNO side. The ES sends the activation request, simplifying the processes on the Operator's side. The end user may activate the service anytime and anywhere without going to the Carrier's Point of Sale.

Managing services

It’s possible to manage the available services for a given end-user device:

  • Managing #VoLTE services are becoming increasingly popular since more and more Operators shut down 3G frequencies. Of course, everyone here can argue that the Operator can offer this based on the settings in the core network part; however, the latest features allow Operators to configure the settings while the end-user is attached to the home network or when roaming - version of GSMA TS.43 v8.0 spec.

  • Configuration of the #VoWiFi service, taking into account specific regulatory requirements for a given country such as acceptance of T&Cs and provision of an emergency address for the 911 services.

  • The best-known 'One Number' or Apple Family Setup/Android 'Different Number' activation services are for wearable devices. Currently, ES supports service activation and service transfer from old device to the new ones, including eSIM transfer, remote SIM provisioning and updating the data plan on the Operator's side. The end user needs only to select the transfer button, and ES performs all other necessary operations.

  • Providing services for Primary Device eSIM transfer, including eSIM download on the new Primary Device and update of end-user settings on the Operator's side (ES performs all actions on behalf of the end-user, increasing user satisfaction!). The service is available for Apple and Android Primary Devices!
