Providing global enterprise teams with  reliable, secure, and cost-effective mobile connectivity is a constant priority for IT departments, where domestic service is understandably the focus, but all too often international roaming is very much an afterthought.

The right mobile enterprise plan allows employees to freely and effectively stay connected globally, but should also enable  connectivity anywhere in the world on a secure, fast, and economical basis. Ideally, these plans should be flexible and scalable, growing in line with the team's size and enabling travel to new countries at a moment's notice. Business plans from traditional network carriers are usually effective domestically yet more often than not do they offer this same capability for a globally mobile workforce . True cross-border connectivity requires a more flexible solution.

We’ve previously shown how working with eSIM technology and an MVNO partner like 1GLOBAL can help to achieve this goal with a dedicated mobile device strategy.

But why are MVNOs so suited to providing international mobile coverage? And what differentiates full MVNOs like 1GLOBAL from traditional mobile carriers?

What does MVNO status entail?

Thirty years ago, nearly all global mobile connectivity was controlled by a handful of Mobile Network Operators, or MNOs. These are telecoms carriers with extensive physical infrastructure, often developed over decades. The defining feature of an MNO is the ownership of mobile masts or antennas that grant them access to the wireless radio spectrum.

As public demand for wireless data surged during the mobile phone boom of the late '90s, the market diversified. Smaller, more agile mobile providers began to purchase or lease admission to the radio access network (RAN) from the MNOs and repackage it for a wider array of customers. These were the first MVNOs, or mobile virtual network operators.

Today, the MVNO space is one of the fastest-growing sectors in the telecom industry. Originating in Scandinavia in the 1990s, the MVNO market value is predicted to exceed $170 billion by 2030.

MVNO vs MNO

While MVNOs may not directly own their network access, the model is often more appealing for consumers. This is because leasing access from a legacy MNO allows MVNOs more agility to respond to customer needs, establish presence in new markets, rapidly scale to meet customer requirements, enable redundant access across multiple carriers and introduce new products.

Digital-first MVNOs like 1GLOBAL leverage their years of eSIM expertise to provide customers with a technical advantage. The 1GLOBAL API suite is a full-integrable mobile management solution that can be incorporated with any mobile device management (MDM) software, providing enterprise clients with a simple, unified view of their connectivity usage across all employees on a single platform.

While MNOs control network access, the scale of their operations often prevents them from delivering the tailored solutions and dedicated customer service of a responsive MVNO like 1GLOBAL.

What defines a full MVNO?

The MVNO model is now so widespread that companies outside the telecommunications space are rapidly entering the mobile market. From supermarkets to celebrity YouTubers, selling mobile plans is an increasingly common avenue for brands with established customer bases.

The MVNO spectrum covers everything from “light” to "heavy" MVNOs, distinguished by the degree of technical infrastructure they own.

  • Light MVNOs outsource much of the technical aspects of their service to established telecommunications brands and other MVNOs. Often, these brands prioritize marketing, branding, and accessibility over technical infrastructure, subcontracting this to telecommunications specialists like 1GLOBAL. Light MVNOs typically feature easy-to-use products and a focus on low-cost mobile plans. Light MVNOs are one of the fastest-growing sectors of the mobile industry, as their business model allows for rapid market entry and swift customer acquisition.

  • Heavy MVNOs directly own a greater proportion of their services than light MVNOs, including physical infrastructure like data centers. The heaviest MNVOs (also known as "full MVNOs") own every aspect of their operations apart from access to the radio spectrum. Launching a heavy MVNO is more expensive and time-consuming, though it provides the owner with greater control over their coverage, pricing, and technological capabilities. As they are less dependent on external partners, heavy MVNOs tend to be more stable.

  • The Light MVNO model is made possible by MVNEs, or Mobile Virtual Network Enablers. These are IT companies contracted to handle the specialized connectivity services required to offer wireless connectivity, including brokering access deals with MNOs, remote SIM distribution, and billing. As eSIM experts, 1GLOBAL is both an MVNO and MVNE. This provides it with a unique insight into the wireless market.

With radio spectrum access leased from MNOs and the bulk of the technical services managed by MVNEs, a new MVNO can be developed and launched in a matter of weeks. When it comes to worldwide service, however, not all MVNOs are created equal. Full MVNOs are operators that own every aspect of their operations outside of the radio access network.

1GLOBAL, the worldwide MVNO

Full MVNOs are less common than light MVNOs due to the level of infrastructure and technical expertise required. Achieving full MVNO status with the associated regulatory approvals in just one country is a rare feat. 1GLOBAL is a full MVNO in ten.

Whether light or heavy, nearly all MVNOs outsource some element of their operations to other specialists. What makes 1GLOBAL so unique in the telco space is its foundation as a tech company and eSIM provider this equips it with deep industry knowledge and full ownership of the entire tech stack and eSIM ecosystem. For customers, this means a stable and reliable connectivity partner with the rapid scaling possibilities of an MVNO.

Why it matters

Different global regions have different mobile requirements – domestic MNOs can’t be expected to deliver region-specific telco services for other countries, while negotiating new roaming agreements with local telcos is more often than not an expensive and arduous undertaking.

This is why 1GLOBAL has worked to achieve full MVNO status in several strategically important locations. The 1GLOBAL core network is one of the strongest in the world: by establishing accredited MVNO status in five separate continents, we can provide truly global network support to multinational clients in 190+ countries.

MVNO agility with an MNO's reach

1GLOBAL is a full MVNO with a custom-built tech stack, offering our partners greater telco capabilities than our competitors.

For clients, this means the flexibility and dedicated personal service that would be expected from an agile MVNO, backed up with the technical capabilities, product knowledge, and global reach of an established MNO.

The MNO capabilities that enterprise clients require – a core network, global numbers with porting, in-house billing, and dedicated customer care – are also available through 1GLOBAL, due to our worldwide footprint.

Crucially, this full control is coupled with the responsiveness of an MVNO and a tech stack that integrates 1GLOBAL eSIM management platforms with any existing mobile management (MDM) software.

It’s this combination of agility and ability that distinguishes 1GLOBAL solutions in the enterprise connectivity field.

As a digital-first company, 1GLOBAL provides a series of innovative telco services, from fully-integrable APIs to a native SIM OS and an in-house GSMA accredited eSIM orchestration and delivery platform.

This unique position has made us a trusted partner of dozens of multinational institutions. As the demand for mobile data continues to grow, scalable telco plans have become an essential requirement for any international organization.
