Entitlement Server – the value differentiator for SIM provisioners
The rankings assess a relatively new, but deeply embedded, element of the mobile landscape: the entitlement server.
An entitlement server (ES) is one of many software services that manage the over-the-air (OTA) distribution, lifecycle, and recall of eSIM profiles. Collectively, these solutions are known as remote SIM provisioning (RSP). An entitlement server is a specialized process within the RSP – one that has been growing in stature in recent years.
Entitlement servers determine which network features are available to each user on a mobile network by automatically identifying each device and governing its permissions and level of network access. Some features, like Vo-WiFi calling or multi-device usage, may only be available to select users.
When a new user first subscribes to a mobile network, the entitlement server automatically decides which features they have access to, providing an instant, “out-of-the-box" user experience: they turn on their new device(s) and can immediately begin using the network, configured precisely to their provider’s specifications.
When a mobile operator wishes to onboard new users, it needs an entitlement server to provide this seamless process. When a company wants to expand its mobile service to employees, an entitlement server ensures the right features reach the right people, without requiring time-consuming user input or manual effort from IT administrators.
They allow mobile operators to diversify their revenue streams by making advanced network features like international roaming plans available to their customers – and ensuring these features are automatically and securely rolled out to the correct devices.
Consumer eSIM adoption is rapidly growing, and the ability to orchestrate these eSIM subscriptions across a growing user base is now an essential factor for success in the mobile industry.
Entitlement servers are required for automated eSIM lifecycle management, helping companies automatically manage the distribution, servicing, and recall of individual user profiles, and the permissions attached to each one.
With the ongoing rollout of 5G, entitlement servers are poised to have their moment in the sun. The new network standard opens up a world of potential additional network features for operators to offer their customers — with the entitlement server functioning as an essential middleman.
Features like eSIM transfer, where users can switch SIM profiles from one device to another, or multi-device subscriptions, where users enrol smartwatches, phones, and tablets to the same network provider, are enabled by an entitlement-server-backed eSIM orchestration service.
This is particularly useful for serving the rising demand in cellular smartwatches and tablets – entitlement servers allow operators to automatically identify and activate multiple devices per user, preventing lengthy manual setup processes, greatly accelerating the onboarding process for customer and operator.
As more and more non-telco brands, from banks to supermarkets, begin to launch their own mobile services, the true value of entitlement servers is becoming apparent.
Entitlement Servers and white-label eSIMs
White-label telecommunications use entitlement servers to unlock new services for their users and build lasting customer relationships. Fintech pioneer Revolut partnered with 1GLOBAL to incorporate mobile plans into its app, providing millions of users with access to a range of data plans. Regular Revolut account holders can choose from several travel or domestic data packages and purchase them directly within the Revolut app. Subscribers to Revolut’s premium account tier, Revolut Ultra, receive 3GB of mobile data for free every month as part of their subscription. The entitlement server is the key software feature that makes this possible, governing mobile data access to millions of Revolut users. Used in this way, the entitlement server provides more than just an improved customer experience or a more diversified revenue stream: it’s a key driver of customer retention and long-term growth.
1GLOBAL and eSIM orchestration
The 1GLOBAL entitlement server is an integral aspect of the wider Remote SIM Provisioning and eSIM orchestration service. As a fully accredited MVNO, with our own global core network, 1GLOBAL is uniquely attuned to the needs of current mobile operators and brands looking to expand into the telecommunications space. The new findings from Counterpoint Research reaffirm 1GLOBAL’s ongoing ability to develop and deploy market-leading eSIM services for our clients. The rankings are based not just on current ability and influence, but on innovative capability.
The consumer eSIM market is growing at unprecedented rates, with eSIMs set to become the majority SIM format worldwide by 2030. Scalable, automated solutions like the entitlement server can ready companies for this surging demand while improving both security and customer experiences.
