Swiss-based semi-conductor company STMicroelectronics has introduced the ST4SIM-300, the first embedded SIM (eSIM) hardware component that adheres to the new GSMA eSIM IoT Technical Specification (SGP.32). This new spec chip builds on existing eSIM standards, incorporating new IoT protocols enabling easier remote, over-the-air (OTA) programming of device subscriber identities for hyper-scalable global network connectivity.

Enhanced interoperability
Designed for compact IoT devices like asset trackers, utility meters, and portable healthcare devices, the ST4SIM-300 ensures interoperability across global 4G and 5G networks and is suitable for bandwidth-constrained applications such as narrow-band IoT (NB-IoT). The plug-and-play chip, along with the associated IoT protocols, streamlines the management of connected fleets, making it equally accessible to multinational enterprise as to smaller-scale operators.
Broader compatibility
The new chip is fully GSMA- compliant for remote SIM provisioning, is compatible with 2G, 3G, 4G (LTE), CDMA, NB-IoT, and CAT-M networks. The chip utilizes an ISO/IEC 7816 protocol to communicate with the device modem, facilitating OTA updates of subscriber IDs. Available in various packages, including PCB-mountable DFN and WLCSP, as well as physical SIM card configurations, the chip includes optional embedded secure elements (eSEs) for secure storage and crypto services.
The eSIM advantage
Embedded SIM (eSIM) technology serves the same function as traditional physical SIM cards but offers advantages in terms of weight and space for more compact designs, increased robustness, plus the ability for remote profile swapping. The recent GSMA eSIM specifications (SGP.32) further enhances eSIM capabilities by enabling device OEMs to manage subscriber identities, simplifying OTA configuration for global cellular networks.
